Overview
The Free Methodist denomination came about in 1860, when some members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the time split away. These members, including one Benjamin Titus Roberts, disagreed with some of the practices of the Church and, upon splitting with the Church, held a meeting with some pastors and others who sympathized with their position. This meeting, taking place in Pekin, New York in 1860, gave birth to the Free Methodist denomination. Not long after, Roberts was ordained as the first Bishop of the Free Methodist Church. Today, there are over 830 Free Methodist churches in the United States alone, with over 1.5 million members worldwide. Currently, there are a handful of colleges/universities in the United States that are associated with the Free Methodist Church.
