The Lutheran denomination takes its roots from the protestant reformation in the 16th century. Martin Luther’s posting of the 95 theses on the Church door and subsequent excommunication from the Catholic Church is considered to be the beginning of the Lutheran denomination. Lutheranism spread quickly, beginning primarily in Germany, and had made its way to the United States in the 17th century. Today, Lutherans make up one of the largest protestant denominations, with around 80 million adherents worldwide and approximately 16,000 churches in the United States alone. There are currently over 30 colleges/universities associated with the Lutheran Denomination.
