Overview
The Mennonite tradition emerged from the Anabaptist movement in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation. Menno Simons became one of the most influential early leaders of the movement, which emphasized adult baptism, discipleship, peace, and community. Though Mennonites faced significant persecution in their early history, the tradition spread throughout Europe and eventually around the world. Today, there are millions of Mennonite adherents worldwide, along with a number of associated universities and colleges in the United States.
