Overview
The Presbyterian denomination came out of the protestant reformation in the 16th century. Though influenced by the teachings of John Calvin, the Presbyterian denomination emerged in Scotland under the leadership of John Knox. Presbyterianism made its way to the United States in 1706, starting off in Philadelphia, where the Presbytery of Philadelphia formed under the leadership of Francis Makemie. The denomination quickly spread throughout the United States and world. Today, the denomination, though divided into several branches of Presbyterianism, totals about 1.5 million members, and over 10,000 churches in just the United States. There are many colleges and universities currently associated with the Presbyterian denomination (or one of its branches).
