Overview
The Seventh-day Adventist denomination rose out of the Adventist movement of the 1840s, influenced by the predictions and teachings of William Miller. Joseph Bates, James White, and his wife, Ellen Harmon White pioneered the denomination, however, which was firmly established in 1863. The denomination spread rapidly throughout the rest of the 19th century, making its way across much of the globe. Today, there are around 21 million members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church worldwide, and over 153,000 congregations. Currently, there are 12 colleges/universities in the United States associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
