Though influenced by the teachings of John Wesley and the Spiritual revival he contributed to in the mid-1700s, the Wesleyan denomination takes its early roots from a denominational split from the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1843. The new denomination started out as the Wesleyan Methodist Church, later merging with the Pilgrim Holiness Church in 1968 to form what is the modern Wesleyan denomination. Today, the Wesleyan denomination has about 600,000 members spread across 99 countries. In the United States, there are four colleges/universities associated with the Wesleyan denomination.
